Police and emergency responders were called to scene shortly after 12 noon on March 8

A 23-year-old worker was killed by a masonry block wall that collapsed on top of him at an Oakville, ON townhouse construction site on March 8. Halton Region police, firefighters and paramedics attempted a rescue, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The Ontario Ministry of Labour and the coroner’s office are investigating.

High winds were reported in the region at the time of the 12.40 pm incident, but Paul Boissonneault, deputy chief of operations at Oakville Fire, told CBC Toronto that he could not confirm whether the winds were a factor in the collapse of the wall.

David Hill, president of Ballantry Homes, the firm developing the Upper Glen Abbey site near Dundas Street and Bronte Road, released a statement saying the company is “deeply saddened” and is “cooperating fully with the regulatory agencies investigating this accident.”
