Where’s your “discount,” Ontario College of Trades?

The Ontario College of Trades is playing fast and loose with the truth on their Manulife health and dental program, says Alec Caldwell

ZERO discount masterSeems the people over the Ontario College of Trades want their members to believe they’re getting   discounts on things like health and dental plans.

The OCOT web site clearly states: “As a member of the Ontario College of Trades, we’re working to provide you discounts on various services”

Then they say: “Want to see more discounts?”

I thought a little fact-checking was in order. Here’s what I found:

There was NO “discount” included in the Manulife base health and dental plan quoted on the OCOT  web site. In fact, the identical plan can be bought through a licensed insurance broker, for the identical price and there’s no annual OCOT membership fees when using insurance brokers.

Here’s the cost comparisons in purchase the OCOT (Manulife) base health and dental plan. It was based on a couple, male and female, both aged 62. Cost through the OCOT was $192.00 monthly. Through a licensed insurance broker it was still $192.00.

Where’s the discount, OCOT?

What else is the OCOT claiming to provide for its members, that it actually is NOT providing?

You need licensed professionals for financial services and you won’t find them at the Ontario College of Trades.

Thanks for digging up dirt against this fraudulent government agency Alec. Keep up the good work!

I tested the Breckles Insurance offer as per the OCOT benefit listing, and could get identical home rental package insurance through at least three other insurance brokers for less. Another useless discount ”benefit”: Also to note is that it took them better than 4 months to contact me after I filled out the request at the Breckles site.

Thanks Mark & Dean for taking time out to make comment. More people need to speak up when they see unfairness. Its only when we do this, can change occur. Silence helps no one!!!

I’m a hairstylist, and there are no unions for hairstylists, for which I’m glad. As far as OCOT goes, it is just a tax grab. They do nothing for hairstylists. I never knew we were offered any kind of benefits or insurance. I’ve never seen any communication from OCOT, except when they want me to pay my dues. As far as I’m concerned, I pay them to police me, and nothing more. I resent that hugely. It’s probably not even legal.

They took care of what would have been an illegal operation by granting all the powers their enforcers need via the Ontario College of Trades and Apprentices Act. The powers are the powers to ask for money – for licenses already earned and paid for to pre-existing bodies, and demand a little surtax, while waxing poetic on building the next generation of skilled trades. Horrendous BS – typical of the way governments often act: Create fiefdoms for friends who need good gigs, like David Tsubouchi.

Its amazing what this OCOT, Ontario Corruption Over Trades can do to miss- leading their victims. Apparently there is no real government in Ontario. Its only tax puppets and their tax agencies. The economic damage in this Province done by these minons, will be known in short time in the future, it will make people go bananas.

The wind power fiasco will go at 30 billion debt or pass that, together with pending law suites. The Liberal government became the disgrace-full apparatus. It seems everything they touch became damage. Can’t be understood how these crooks still there.

Maybe David Tsubouchi have more infamous dented tuna cans for sale, but this time with OCOT bs discount. For those don’t know what this means, should check his pass on Harris government, tuna David.
how can a gambling lawyer be turn into a CEO of the trades infamous agency? Does he have a trades certificate to be in there? Unless the OCOT is a gambling agency, which sounds like it.
Under the OCOT by laws, its illegal to work on a compulsory trade without a certificate, but apparently wasn’t illegal for them to violated the mean full laws in first place to set this gambling agency.
Those already been certified for decades and on the senior level became illegal to work unless obey these crooks, its fraud to the major level. The same senior certified people can go into other Canadian Provinces and territories, also other countries in the world and start work without any other bs, only here in Ontario, it seems special and attractive for thieves to pray on others; That’s insane.

Does this not fall under racketeering?

OCOT is nothing but a scam that does absolutely nothing to advance the construction industry and most Construction Associations know this but yet they do nothing about it. I say that we should all boycott paying any fees to OCOT and get rid of it. In my opinion it was set up as a reward to a special interest group.

There are few story’s about the side effects of the OCOT enforcement. Its unreasonable and clearly modeled in Union fashion. It has directly effected my future of a possible business in the Ontario region. Something they have not realized in their haste to drop the hammer and intimidate anyone under the mandatory label is the possible power they have given to work groups. For example it occurred to me it will be illegal for anyone to work in the Hair cutting without being part of the program and even the owner cant work at it legally . So what happens when the groups figure out they can have a membership of their own ( not a union )and hold all the power in a given line of work. Scenario :: Hair cutters are not happy about lack of overtime and post on social networks we should all take Monday off in Ontario. What can be done ? They cant be replaced with non OCOT certified help legally. How about Mechanics have their own non-union group to leverage for things they feel they deserve . ( non union again ) I mean they really must have been on a power trip to not realize the potential power they have given to certified workers of which they cant be replaced and the OCOT themselves can be called to move out anyone not with the program. I would really like to explore this farther if people are interested . Reddit is a perfect place with a separate channel to do so. Anyone interested in building a non union association to take power back from the OCOT?
