A Canadian Contractor pub night

Canadian Contractor

The best idea I've stolen all year

I was speaking with a group of students at George Brown College when one of the students asked if Canadian Contractor magazine had any opportunities for students fresh out of renovation school to do some networking. I had to say no, but before the conversation was over, one of the students yelled out, “Canadian Contractor pub night!!”

That sounded good to me, so it’s on. Very informal. Nothing fancy. Just a chance for readers, writers, advertisers and students to get together and have a beer, bitch about the WSIB, the COT, criticize our writers and watch the Leafs lose a playoff game. We’ll spring for the wings, nachos and beer nuts. Let’s get it booked before the weather warms up too much.

Sound good? You are invited, of course, but I need a suggestion as to where to have it. I’m thinking it should be a Thursday night, say 7:00 to 10:00 pm at a pub with good parking, good food and close to the 401 so guys can get to it from anywhere in the GTA.

If you know a good pub that fits that description, comment here and we’ll put in on the list of potentials.

Cheers.

Can Con Pub Nights! What a great idea 😉

Thursday is a great day for pub nights – following in our GBC tradition. I’m partial to the Madison Avenue Pub but it is neither close to the 401 or good for parking. But it has cheap drinks, even cheaper appies and a good VIP space you can book in advance.

I would prefer to have it downtown, but I’m thinking there are some that want to come from the burbs. We might have to have two!!

    Rob,
Having good parking for a contractor pub night is critical. Lots of (quite big) vehicles will come. Thursdays have worked well for us also.
    (and I won’t mention who you stole this idea from…. 🙂 )

  3. May I suggest the Courtyard Pub in Pickering at Brock & 401. Tons of parking, lots of room, good food and cheap beer specials.

I suggest a place with heritage. How about the Balmy Beach Club? I am a member and can arrange some space and a sponsor like Rona who will pay for the space rental (not much az we wil make them money on beer!) and somd apetizers.
This is a way to get togeyher on the Queen car for students and as close to downtown as is the base of the DVP!
Plus it has way more class than meeting in a bar!
Call me at 647-967-7366 and lets discuss it.

I like this, but we’ll probably have to have two, then. Balmy Beach club is kinda out of the way. I used to live near there. Pretty nice place. I’ll have to think about that one. Thanks for the idea.
