The repeated abuse of the rules by this individual merits his consequences

Following the jailing of an unlicensed electrician operating in the Hamilton, ON area, two weeks ago, we have been hearing lots of support for this decision. (Even though a look through the professional journals of any College of Physicians and Surgeons will indicate that doctors will routinely not only avoid jail for sexual advances on their patients, in the vast majority of cases they won’t even permanently lose their licenses! It seems that miswiring an electrical box, without having paid for your CofQ, is a worse crime than a doctor assaulting their own patient. It’s a funny world.)

Here’s some support from the Ontario Electrical League (press release) for the Electrical Safety Authority, that did the work on putting Richard “Sparky” Hazel behind bars.  

TORONTO, October 24, 2014 – The Ontario Electrical League (OEL) would like to congratulate the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) of Ontario in its prosecution of a recent unlicensed electrician. In a statement released by the ESA, “Richard Hazel […] was found guilty on eight charges: four counts of working without an electrical contractor’s licence, one count of failing to obtain the required inspections, two counts of producing a false certificate of qualification and one count of leaving behind unsafe electrical conditions at four homes in Hamilton and Burlington.”

“The OEL proudly represents electrical contractors dedicated to making sure customers receive the highest quality in service while creating a safe workplace for its employees,” says Stephen Sell, president of the OEL. “The repeated abuse of the rules by this individual merits his consequences. This individual is misrepresenting the profession, and those of us who understand why it’s important to be in compliance with provincial standards.”
