Always Be Marketing

Canadian Contractor Business Market

As the summer approaches and construction is in full gear, you have to continue to market your company.  Even when you are working 14 hour days and 6 or 7 days a week, you have to continue to market your company.  That might sound strange when you already have so much work and so much to quote on but look at it like this.  When you are completely jammed with work you can be selective of the new work that you take on.  You can search for that perfect homeowner.  You know the one – easy to deal with, pays on time and is willing to pay you a fair dollar for the work that you do.  Since you don’t need the business at the moment it means that you can negotiate harder and be much more choosy of who you work for and the work that you are willing to take on.

The major reason for marketing while you are swamped is because you won’t be swamped forever if you don’t keep up the marketing.  I hear this all the time -” I am too busy to market my company as I already can’t keep up with all the work. There is not time to market and even if there was time, I can’t handle the work”.  Sound like something you have heard too (maybe even said)?  What usually follows a time of being super busy and not marketing, is a time of not enough business!  I see this cycle all the time.

Every contractor has to make time to promote their company, whether it is through advertising, social media updates, blogging, referral marketing, trade shows, automated email marketing etc.  You might do less than you would if you weren’t busy but you can never stop.

If you are still not convinced, here is one more reason.  When you continue to market when you are busy, you will find more opportunities. More opportunities means you are now able to grow your company and take it to the next level where you can handle the extra work.  That is how companies grow.
