The Ontario College of Trades will be sending fees invoices to many construction trades, with a mandatory requirement to pay them, early in 2013.

    Note the words now being used by the CoT ;
    1) industry-led organization,
    2) putting decision-making back in the hands of skilled trades people.
    Their focus now is to appear logical to the average reader…who thinks: ” so what if you pay a small tax ” for this wonderful industry-driven COLLEGE ( with all the nice feelings people have about that word ) which is to ensure that workers are qualified for MY well-being….and representative.( which implies democratic )

    Points for us to raise:
    1) appointed…not elected
    2) over 80% ( Merit Open Shop says 89% ) of appointees are union affiliated…as workers and employers
    3) only about 27% of construction are unionized. I think about 15% of population ( excluding civil servants ) are unionized
    4) the executive-secretary of the IBEW ( John Grimshaw ) said ,at a PAC/IC meeting , ‘ “as long as we have one journeyman not working, the last thing we need are more apprentices” or close to that statement excluding expletives.
    5) the IBEW does not permit contractors to take on co-op students
    6) the president of the IBEW ( James Barry ) heads up the construction sector. When he was on the PAC/IC, he voted against changing the ratios
    7) the comments from Thurston…hijacked by a group….hidden agenda… who want only to bring Quebec-style labour to Ontario
    8) all workers will have to provide the name of their employer. All this is then public knowledge.
    i. This makes the College nothing more than a Rolodex for the union organizers

    People connect with …discrimination…hidden agendas….control of all livelihood…….work is already done by a “neutral” govt …..people in charge contributed $ 15 m to Liberals. ( people relate to corruption as in Quebec construction )

    There are rumours that the IBEW intends to put all apprentices through their trade schools…anyone have anything concrete on this ?

    Question: Why no Ministerial oversight? Isn’t it true that any separate arms length agency with no Ministerial oversight is only ever formed to further hidden agendas?

    I wish to cancel my sheetmetal trade license. I am close to retirement and no longer require this license. My license is still good for a couple of years. What is the procedure to remove me from the list of license tradesman so i am not penalized with this tax
