“Certification is the answer to house collapse”

Canadian Contractor

We recently posted comments from both publisher Rob Koci and editor Steve Payne regarding a house collapse in Toronto. Publisher Koci was defensive of the contractor, editor Payne not at all. (Read the original post here.) This reader takes Steve’s side, and says certification is the answer.

This “contractor” presents a very good argument for proper certification and training of real contractors. Given his demonstrated disregard for laws, safety and physics, I doubt he could attain such certification.

The last thing our industry needs is more red tape, fees and goverment bodies to pay. What we need is an easier way to obtain permits, (so there is no excuse not to get one) inspectors and plan examiners that know there job and what they are looking at.

All the systems are in place but it’s so broken and so expensive to work in this industry and to follow all the rules and regs that I’m constantly talking H/O into getting permits and I know I loose jobs because I insist on it and the H/O don’t want to pay or be bothered by the whole process.

If it were up to me fix the systems in place and make it work properly and efficent so more people follow can actually follow the “rules”, BEFORE adding more crap that’s just going to cost everyone money and not accomplish anything except force more people to fly under the radar. This would leave more time and money for those of us who try our best to train employees, learn new products and follow best practises to actually be competitive with the “fly by nighters” and they would actually have to pick it up and get better or be forced out of business.

Just my 2 cents but what do I know I just fight this battle every day in my boots, its the people in glass towers in their pant suits that now how to “fix” everything.
