Why don’t we have photo ID licenses for tradespeople?

Frequent poster Oliber asked an interesting question last week, in response to the story about an unlicensed “electrician” who wired some pot lights in a hazardous way, receiving a jail sentence in Ontario…

“That’s why long ago I asked for electricians and other compulsory trades people to have a license photo ID or a drivers license incorporated with it. But there is no need for alphabet soup regulatory agencies. Nor do the compulsory trades (under the Ontario College of Trades) need inspections of their work work. Simply give customers the chance to identify the real contractors from the crooks. Then if they allow themselves to be defrauded that should that be their fault and nobody else’s.
