Hairstylist reaches out to her fellow trades people in our industry re: Ontario College of Trades
Before OCOT started "regulating" her industry, Edith paid $60 for her hairstyling credentials, every three years. Now, she has to pay OCOT over $400 in that same time period.
The Ontario College of Trades (OCOT) not only forces to plumbers and electricians, for example, to pay fees to their organization – even though they have been extremely well-regulated by their own professions for decades – they also force hair stylists to cough up, too. (Again, hairstylists were already being regulated by their own industry, too.)
Hairstylists often find our articles about OCOT relevant to them. As did Edith Knox, below, who wrote this…
“My name is Edith, and I am a hairstylist, and in good standing with the OCOT. Myself as well as many other people feel that the OCOT should be removed. They are not a college. They don’t train people in any trade. Whereas we used to pay a fee of $60 every three years (for hairstylist credentials) we are now forced to pay $136 every year to the OCOT. And if we can’t afford to pay it, we are being fined. AND we can’t even work because the OCOT will then put us as inactive. In my opinion, this is extortion – which is illegal! I know of many people who have lost their jobs… because of OCOT.
The employees at OCOT are rude and talk down to us tradespeople. They are no help at all – if you can even get a hold of a real person there. They just tell us to go on their website, which is no help either. The OCOT are overpaid, glorified answering machines! They wouldn’t know how to do real work. They are really good at putting honest, hard working people out of work.”

I totally agree! My daughter is a colourist and faces the same issues. This is absolutely extortion! What benefit does anyone get for the fees they are forced to pay?
Well said, Edith. You views reflect most of the rest of ours for the last few years. Ocot is a tax on the working poor, to elevate the status of the elite liberals that work there. We must always fight them, never give up people!
Hi Edith, thanks to expose this apparatus of thieves, that’s what they are a college of thieves. This insane idea from the squander party or demo-rats, is illegal, was set up illegally for tax purposes.
Under the Canadian charter of rights and freedoms this so called college of trades is in violation of our freedoms. Any Canadian citizen or land immigrant is, she/he, free to operate on her/his desire carrier or profession for the purpose of a leaving, a way to support one-self or others as a family members. Trades people aren’t sports clubs, they are responsible for the Canadian economy, so as Provincial, they are professional people, so became a easy target for extortion tax.
Where is the respect they deserved?
Furthermore there is an apparent conflict of interest, The ocot, is a none for profit org, collecting this insane trades tax. Trades licenses were sold to them for a profit, to maintain these demo-rats cronies employed. Another violation of the humans rights codes, either pay to capony, or be fine or out of business.
Where is the option?
Furthermore ocot can sell part of or full info of their so called members, to third parties, this is insane.
For what purpose?
There isn’t any benefit to the trades people, only payment and tyranny. Before was no tax on the trades license, now there is hst attached, which makes the federal government guilty of collecting tax on something which were illegal to begin with and still at this point.
No trades people ever voted in a free will for this apparatus, so no transparency was in place. In democracy as so preach by our politicians this insane capony apparatus done on the backrooms, and rushed trough legislation, is the typical Liberals fraudulent way to coerced people, as long as the government sees tax grabs.
They can trump all laws, no matter to them.
What amazed me is, the Ontarians became to passive on matters they can became tax targets, for no reason, also losing economic power, freedoms and rights as fast as the wind can blow.
Ontario government is no longer capable of doing anything in the good serving for the people, they became like economic terrorists, like drunk addicts on spending and collecting tax under the legislation protection, laws. The world wide Province with more laws and regulations, that’s pathetic, half of them is nothing but garbage.
No one should be forced in position of des vantage of performing his/her carrier for a purpose of taxation. This trades tax, is a direct tax, a single out tax, plus federal tax too, for the purpose of perform a profession, that’s why is in violation of the human rights code.
Direct tax was created on the purpose of sales only, exchange of goods. Which gives options, to the people. The government called the ocot services, really? where are they? what did one trades people get in exchange? A capony fake paper from an illegal agency saying can operate in your trade, after a payment?
A college is a high level school ground, to learn or update trades, where are these class? where are these teachers? when do they start the courses? Where is our benefits?
Can the ocot stand in a court of law?
The ocot should be able to publicly disclose where is the location of the college? what class’s do they teach? when these class’s start and finish? How much the cost to attend those? what benefits and improvement these class will do to the trades people?
There is no college anywhere, only a the Ontario Corruption on Trades.
This is a economic crime done to us all trades people, in Ontario. Only hope this wynnie and her cronies be ousted very soon. Be charge with fraud, economic misleading, lying on purpose, coercing for insane ways of taxation, cronism, abusing of legislation to be drunk on power, and so many others.
