Home automation adds convenience, but do it right

Greg says he’s seen too many bad installs

By any estimation, the global home automation industry is big and poised to get much bigger. Market research available from MarketandResearch.com claims, “The home automation system market is expected to be valued at USD 79.57 billion by 2022, growing at a CAGR of 11.3% between 2017 and 2022.”  Our story last week explained how home automation is coming of age, yet with some obstacles to overcome. We heard back from ‘Greg’.

“We have encountered so many young resale homes that were completely and totally wired wrong or just not wired at all for anything. Are you still putting the coax TV cable above the fireplace? Have you thought that through?

Houses larger than 5000 square feet pretty much require some sort of ‘Smart’ or automation system, be it sound, lighting, shades, security, cameras, locks, home theatre, video distribution, garage door openers, anything. There is a lot that can be done to add convenience to your clients’ homes. And like any other system it needs to be professionally designed, and not the day before drywall goes up!

This is how you avoid the ‘angry husband and pissed-off wife’ who think it all should ‘just work’.”

  1. The goal of home automation is to add simplicity to homeowners lives. Far too often, I have seen home automation systems in homes that are unused or under utilized because they are too complicated, have terrible control systems and employ competing standards. Best practice in home automation is to stick with one standard, utilize simple control systems and limit the options. Home automation should never complicate homeowners lives. I echo the sentiment, “Home automation adds convenience, but do it right”!
