Kitchen contractor wonders why his WSIB rate is twice that of an arborist going up trees with a chainsaw

Kitchen contractor rate: 9.1%. Arborist rate: 4.5%. What gives?

Editor’s Note Number 1: This post below, from Evan Staite, continues our discussion about how much different types of contractors are paying for workers’ comp across Canada.

Editor’s Note Number 2: We are sure Mr. Staite is merely using a colourful figure of speech when he talks about that, um, specific protest at the WSIB offices. Because we think that kind of workplace injury would raise his future WSIB rates up into the mid 30% range… and maybe over 40%.

“I have a five man kitchen, bathroom and trim business, and I pay a WSIB rate of 9.1% which is absolutely ridiculous. A friend of mine just set up an arborist business where he climbs trees with a chain saw and cuts them down…. Seems pretty dangerous, yet his rate is 4.5%. Is it gonna take someone to light themselves on fire in a WSIB office to make changes?”

As a concrete contractors I pay over 10% of my earnings. At that rate they should be providing insurance off the job site as well. Not to mention a healthy benefits package. My personal insurance company gave me a five million dollar liability coverage as well and for one tenth of the WSIB rate. I just want to know what the breaking point is for us contractors….
