Lorne’s electric paid the price for underpaying workers, reader contends

"This is what happens when you pay for your electricians $10 an hour less..."

Back in November, we wrote about the demise of Lorne’s Electric, Arnprior, Ont., which was shut down by its owner after a reported three employees (out of a total head count of 40 at the non-union firm, total) voted to affiliate Lorne’s workers with the IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers).

Reader Billy didn’t have any sympathy for the proprietor, Eric Glahs, instead blaming him for underpaying his workers in the first place…

We wonder about the fate of the workers, overall. Any of them reading this, who would like to comment, or anyone in the union who wants to vent, too, feel free…

Here is Billy’s comment to us….

“This is what happens when you pay your electricians $10 an hour less and use their own money for their pension plans, etc. I guess lowering market values and undermining other contractors didn’t work out so well. At least the workers that are now in the union will be able to retire with a pension and benefits. Too bad they wasted all that time and money getting fooled!”

  1. 2 sides to story says:

Well if the workers were paid 10 less an hour but had steady jobs better then 10 more per hour and 140 days of work then to the bottom of the out of work list for 1 year or more. 2 sides to every story. Or have the pension plan invested poorly and covering it up to the tune of 30 million or more and only stopped because members went to fsco the watchdog to do something otherwise more pension losses would have occurred as fsco did not do.their job competently either.

And when you don’t work you don’t earn pension monies either. So 2 sides to every story obviously and if you read comments from those with experience unions are not protecting members rights anymore like they should be . Ask the employees of Lorne electric how many of them have steady work now . Does the extra 10 hour after taxes cover layoffs and union dues etc
