Another response to the Vancouver building permit backlog

Permit delays can cause money, materials and effort go down down the drain, Terry says.

This post is from Terry, in response to our link to the Vancouver Sun article on the delays on permits for 69,500 units in the various Vancouver municipalities...

“I have been a worker or owner in building or renovating for almost 30 years. In that time I have worked with and without permits on many types of projects, varying from $1,000 to millions. Regardless of the education or experience of the permit holder, there is always excessive waste on a job due to the complications of our permit system. Money, materials, effort, reputations – and even marriages – can go down the drain. I have seen projects get totally blown out because of the complications created by dealing with the permit. Delays can be caused by someone in the permit office – but usually it is just the system itself.

Contracts separate from the permit can usually be fixed with a simple conversation, some knowledge and some experience. But most of all, a little common sense.”
