Victim of “greed and lack of service” while he tries to do his second apprenticeship

Jordan Beechey says the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program of 15 years ago worked just great. Enter the Ontario College of Trades... and it's a mess.

So the Ontario College of Trades (OCOT) never stops telling us how one of its major reasons for being is to promote the skilled trades to young people. Tell that to Jordan Beechey, who posted this on our site this morning. According to this young man, the system for getting young folks into the trades was much better 15 years ago than it is today…

“Hello, my name is Jordan Beechey. I am a Journeyman working on my 3rd trade, 2nd apprenticeship. First time around in 1998, I joined the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (Editor’s Note: a high school to work transition program) which had no fees to join the schooling – or a C of Q renewal fee after I completed the program in 2000. There was more service, less hassle to get registered and an assessment was done that advanced me into my 2nd year…

This time around, on my second apprenticeship, things have changed… They now charge $552 tuition fees, aside from trying to get journeyman trade fees (double) instead of apprenticeship class fees. And when I was stiffed for my spot last September because they sent 50 invites for 24 spots, the community college wanted a “waiting list fee” aside from the OCOT waiting list. This was not supposed to be charged. I went to the registrar’s office and paid the $552 ($400 fee +$152 admin and tax) before I even received my invite, just in case it was sent to the wrong address again. I didn’t want to be the “barcode/$” that missed one of the 24/50 spots.

I was a spokesman at industrial awareness day at the end of high school because I believed in the program. Now I have a bad taste in my mouth over the greed and lack of service. I’m doing this for me, not OCOT!

I am attempting to volunteer my services to help with the Tradespersons Monument in Ottawa – to be a part of something I believe in… I pay fees to OCOT because I have to, in order to be what I have always wanted to be…”

I am very sorry but not surprised to hear Jordon’s story regarding the OCOT. This is what we get for keeping the liberals in power. They are only interested in empowering themselves and for ever increasing their salaries and benefits. On top of that they are very adept at creating more departments to oversee more areas of our lives. The general population don’t seem to be able to come together and boycott these brazen civil servants. We have to start saying NO and refuse to pay them a dime. They are all paid at least twice the amount they should be and they need putting in their place, they have had it too good for too long.
A good example is the city of Toronto, they are so worried how they will find more money to carry on their projects. The Councillors are sitting at meetings for hours on end wondering who they dare bill for it all. Well its very simple they don’t need more money they just have to cut all city employees wages which are over lets say somewhere between 35,000. to 45,000. by at least 15% the first year and more after that as required. I don’t think any civil servant should earn over $100,000. without a very special reason.
And this does not require another study before it is enacted, its a no brainer even for them.

From an employers side the new system takes signing a guy up from what used to be a quick phone call and a quick meeting to sign the papers that were already filled out to a many hour long nightmare of paperwork of the kind that only bureaucracy can create. This then gets me an extra inspection I don’t need while anyone that is not legal they don’t inspect because only legal guys file permits and form 1000’s to tell them where we are .

In the mechanical trade we already had an inspector, all he had to do was ask to see the CFQ and record it on the inspection report as that was the tradesman who did the work . No CFQ no inspection, no inspection, no occupancy . That would end unlicensed guys for all permit work . No need for the extra bureaucracy to protect my trade .

Agreed. It took forever to get into my second year of school. And luckily by the end of second year they were offering a third year so I just went and paid before getting a letter.

Thanks to Jordan for exposing these OCOT”s crooks.
The OCOT wants to protect the public and consumers, really?
Only they want is to get paid high wages for doing nothing, just selling illusion. The CEO of OCOT Tuna David should be ashamed for the infinite lies he and his crooks are propagating.

Thanks to the Liberals, which are the worse crooks we in Ontario ever have. Its clear more then ever, the people of Ontario will have to demand the Liberals out, or face an uncertain future, it can turn very hard for all ages economically. The Liberals apparently don’t care for the people, only for lobbying agencies and those which paid for them to be elected. Looks more and more like a club of pirates.
