This must be the 10th post we’ve had this year from an Alberta-trained contractor who can’t get easily qualified to work in Ontario, thanks the Ontario College of Trades, the TSSA, and other regulatory agencies in Ontario. Yet the Ontario College of Trades continues to claim that it is “promoting” the trades. Maybe we should collect all the posts we’ve had from well-qualified contractors who have had red tape thrown in their way, and have them all read out in the Ontario Legislature by Garfield Dunl0p, licensed plumber and PC MPP.

“I have a Red Seal Alberta ticket in sheet metal. I moved to Ontario before their College of Trades existed. Now my ticket is invalid and not legal to work here unless I join and pay them their money. What’s worse is they won’t recognize my ticket is good for up to 4 tons a/c. TSSA won’t recognize my ticket has gas fitting training. Too bad, do it over again here if you want to work here is their answer. But make sure you pay us our yearly dues on all your tickets when you get them. Just a government-job creation that tradespersons have to pay for with zero perks! I would rather move back to Alberta. My advice: Alberta has a higher level of education in trades that makes Ontario tickets look like a joke, at least in my trade. Get an Alberta ticket, stay there, otherwise you need 3 different tickets in Ontario to do what you can with your Alberta sheet metal ticket… And it’s free!!!”

There are 2 A/C licences in Ontario, 313D which is for residential or up to 5 ton and the 313A which is unlimited AC/refrigeration, the 313D was created less then a decade ago to try and whip the residential HVAC field into shape, way too many guys doing work without an AC license, I wasn’t even aware of a sheet metal mechanic being allowed AC work unless it’s duct related.
TSSA has also been tightening things up as it was handing out gas licenses like they were going out of style, now some experience is required to get a gas fitter 2 ticket as before night school was all the was needed. I have to say that these are good moves because too many guys doing garbage work out there for cheap, they are dragging the entire industry down, guys are installing AC units and using the pre-charge refrigerant as a way to clean the linesets before brazing???????
If someone has a license from another province then a test should be sufficient, I would have to do the same if I moved to Alberta when it comes to my gas ticket, my 313A is red seal so its valid.
