I’d like to invite everyone in the Toronto area to come out to our next CARAHS seminar, featuring none other than Rob Koci, the publisher of this website.

Rob is not just a journalist and ad sales guy: Rob was a contractor for 20 years (framing houses as well as doing general renovations) until a few years before he became the Founding Editor of Canadian Contractor when its first issue rolled off the press almost 15 years ago.

And if this write-up is giving him too much of an ego, let’s look at the topic Rob will speak on:

The mistakes that Rob made on the tools, in his estimates, and more, are legendary, and he’s not shy about talking about them. (He was a successful contractor, overall. He just went through a learning process the same way we all do.) Like the time he bid a job where he was supposed to INCLUDE the price of the window installation.  Rob thought that there was a separate contract for the windows. He won the job, and was out about $30,000.  He had to lay off his crew and do the last half of the job himself, after hours from his main day job framing houses.

PROFIT from stories like this, including some great tips on estimating, competing and keeping your head in the game.
