Custom kitchens are not twice as good as IKEA kitchens at 3 to 4 times the cost

Roland Skeries says he has installed IKEA kitchens in million dollar homes with excellent customer satisfaction.

Yesterday we posted about IKEA kitchens versus custom kitchens. Here is a reply from Roland Skeries, in favour of IKEA…

“We have installed several hundred IKEA kitchens over the last 10 years and have had no complaints about quality / style / functionality. We now have many repeat customers who have moved and want another IKEA kitchen, we only work by referral and are kept very busy. ‘Custom’ kitchens are not twice as good as an IKEA kitchen at 3 to 4 times the cost: a lot has to do with the planning and installation. Our kitchens have been installed in million dollar homes and our clients are quite proud of the result.”

Cabinet shops are like highway robbers. I have dealt with a very small handful that earn their quote by providing an unique and highly functional design. The majority simply slap particle board boxes together, use low end hardware, and charge a massive profit for a poor thoughtless layout. I have personally purchased two Ikea kitchens and found the process to be very workable and painless, the product of reasonable quality and worth the price tag, and the durability holding up. Find a cabinet shop that doesn’t start at $10K and ramp up from there.

  2. I have built custom kitchens for over 20 years and recently had a request from an architect whom I’ve done a fair amount of work for to assemble and install an ikea kitchen in his home. It was a decent kitchen other than the cardboard backs and the fact that they sent some wrong size cabinets that I had to modify in my shop , a couple of extra’s that didn’t belong in the kitchen and the fact that the numbers on the boxs didn’t match the plan at all. Other than than that it turned out to be a very nice kitchen. Maybe it’s because I’m from the east coast and the fact that I have less than 5 employees but I can build as good or better custom kitchen at a comparable price not 3 or 4 times as much.
