B.C.’s Georgie Awards celebrate Silver Anniversary in 2017

It’s been a quarter century since British Columbia’s prestigious Georgie Awards were formed. Owned and produced by the Canadian Home Builders’ Association of British Columbia (CHBA BC), these awards represent the highest recognition of home building excellence in the province. On Mar. 11, at a celebratory gala dinner at Hyatt Regency Vancouver Hotel, the finest projects developed, created, or marketed between Jan. 2015 and Sept. 2016 will be announced.

Finalists in all 46 award categories were revealed recently, having been judged by a distinguished panel of highly qualified judges from outside of British Columbia, who are selected for their expertise in their field.  For a list of finalists, CLICK HERE.

One of the five finalists in the category of ‘Best Residential Renovation $500,000 to $799,000’ is Versa Homes’ project called ‘Let there be light.’ Here, a young family purchased a 1920’s Tudor mansion and contracted Versa to transform it into a bright, family-friendly home. “The dark and somber feel was a complete mismatch for the sunny disposition of the young family,” Versa said in their press release. “The challenge for them, and for Versa Homes, was to maintain the classic, timeless appeal of the home while transforming it into a bright, warm, modern living space.”

The unfinished basement was turned into a spectacular recreation center, including an indoor hockey rink, gym, cinema, arts and craft center and an open-concept entertainment room. Throughout the renovation design, an effort was made to mix the existing older, textured materials with the more modern ones added.

For example, Versa explains that “classic Shaker-style cabinetry featured mirrored accents. Custom fabricated sliding barn doors saved space while adding a rustic feel. Crushed velvet upholstery was chosen for built-in furniture, and existing Brazilian Teak floor were painstakingly refinished with dark stain, to contrast with the bright, white interior paint throughout. Today, the home feels bright and open in every room—something that was very important to the homeowners.”

The bright and airy result that included several energy-efficient upgrades on the main and upper levels was exactly what this fun-loving family wanted.
