Licensing for Ontario Home Inspectors coming this spring?

How about making them join the Ontario College of Trades? That way their credentials will be impeccable!

As a contractor magazine, we have not focused very much on the consumer-oriented home inspection industry (as opposed to building department inspectors, who we all know are PhDs in building science). But most contractors understand that the quality of (mostly) real estate transaction home inspectors varies widely from ‘professional’ to ‘took an online course and got credentials in a weekend.’ Here is a post from Len Inkster, secretary of the Ontario Association of Certified Home Inspectors (Ontario ACHI), that points to forthcoming regulation from Queen’s Park.

“Home inspectors are not licensed in Ontario. Some inspectors in some jurisdictions may have their businesses licensed in the same way a food-cart has its business licensed, but that’s it. The majority of the home inspection association are working with the Ontario Government to introduce licensing. We are led to believe that an announcement is likely to be made in the Spring of 2016.”

I dealt with an apparent home inspector for my friends house. I did not want to do it myself since it would be a conflict of interest. The inspector was terrible. She did not catch any major problems. Her only comments were, 1 plug was reversed polarity, and 1 door needed weatherstripping, while the roof, foundations had major issues. Go figure. Wanted to charge $450 for nothing. Advised client not to pay her, which was done. Feeling that most inspectors are working for realestate agents.
