Marketplace kicks contractor butt
Canadian Contractor BusinessIs this fair? Is it just a setup to sell adds for Marketplace?
I am hesitant to bring this forward, but in the end, it’s important that stories like this get air play and response from the contractor community. What do you think? Is this fair to us? Is this helping or hurting the home repair and renovation business? Watch the entire episode of Marketplace here. Then comment below.

Fair? If they filmed 10 random contractors and showed results from all 10, then you may think this is “fair”.
They would show some offering high cost best quality practices above and beyond, some middle of the road doing only what is required, and some low cost fly-by-nights that are outright fraudulent and doing more damage that what originally occurred.
But it seems showing excellence performance doesn’t compete well for TV ratings like disasters, scams, and failures. Maybe this is why the nightly “news” highlights the latest murders, crimes, and accidents across the country.
With so much nightly training on the negative, it isn’t surprising that contractors don’t know how to show “quality service” in a YouTube video. Typically, it is a picture of the finished work with “Call me for a Quote” title.

I wonder how other professionals would fair. Journalists, for instance? If their standard of quality is fairness and objectivity, what would they look like in a sting like this?
