Andy Roy’s year-end staff bonus program hasn’t worked the way he planned. His idea was to financially reward his crews based on a combined point score system valuing being on time, on or under budget, and meeting client satisfaction criterion throughout 2018. However, no one seems happy. The problem is, many of these inputs have not meshed well, resulting in uneven rewards within the company. Crew supervisors are pointing fingers all over the place: at estimators who didn’t do their jobs properly, sub-trades who let the company down, suppliers who were late shipping special orders, and clients whose change orders impacted project deadlines — basically things beyond their control. Instead of being pumped up going into 2019, Andy’s staff is disgruntled. What should Andy do better next year?
- Pay the bonuses this year, but scrap the idea entirely after that. Incentivizing time, budgets and quality is impossible.
- Reward each element separately, not as a combination
- Keep with the plan, but seek input from the staff as to how the calculations should be made
