Top young Ontario carpenters compete

LONDON, ON–The province’s top building apprentices showcased their skills at the 28th Annual Carpenters Union Provincial Apprenticeship Contest June 11-13 in London, ON, at the Carpenters and Allied Workers Local 1946’s new 31,000 square foot Carpenters’ Union Training Centre.

The contest saw a dozen carpenters, nine drywall applicators and six floor covering installers compete in their respective trades for the right to represent the province at the National Apprenticeship Contest in Toronto Aug. 22-23.

Justin Wright, Carpenters Local 27, Toronto, took home first place in the carpentry contest. The contest included the completion of a Muskoka-style chair and matching stool, plus an intensive written exam.

“It was a great opportunity for young tradespeople to show off their skills and abilities,” explains Kevin Hoy, president, Local 1946.

It is the first time in about 20 years that the London local will host the competition. The contest will be held at Local 1946’s

All contestants in the three-day event were required to write a theory exam followed up by a two-day practical project.

Winners of the competition will represent their union locals in the 22nd annual United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America National Apprenticeship Contest to be held at Roundhouse Park in downtown Toronto Aug. 22-23.
