More WSIB fat cats on Ontario’s ‘Sunshine List’
Canadian ContractorDavid Lawrence, the WSIB's chief financial officer, earned $421,000 last year, according to the Sunshine List. That's more than twice the premier's salary.
Say what you want about premier Kathleen Wynne and her cronies in the Ontario Liberals, at least she and they continue to allow the publication of the annual ‘Sunshine List,’ in which public sector employees making more than $100,000 annually are identified.
Of course, the list (sort of) shows Wynne herself in a good light. She earns less money as premier than many of the senior bureaucrats at the WSIB.
For example, WSIB CEO David Marshall earned a few dollars over $400,000, John Slinger (Chief Operating Officer) netted $354,417. David Lawrence (Chief Financial Officer) became their #1 earner with a cool $421,000. The lowest on this list of 13 was Danna Bain (Deputy Chief Operation Officer) with a meager $282,669!!! Ms Bain even beat the $209,374 Wynne earned in 2015.
These folks at WSIB certainly know how to pad their bank accounts.
This government organization makes construction companies liable to pay steep rates into their insurance system, including mandating many self employed business owners. They are mired in controversy, are billions in debt, denying claimants benefits and many seem legitimate.
It’s time WSIB cut some of the fat off their payroll, especially their management. Their 2015 incomes should be an embarrassment, yet hunger strikes from denied claimants, workers protests outside their offices and negative newspapers reports, don’t seem to embarrass the WSIB. So I’m sure their huge incomes won’t change matters.
There needs to be more accountability and a better system, including privatization of an organization that seems badly broken.

The W.S.I.B. is nothing more than the legal Mafia in bed with the government. The both enact laws on how to collect fees legally, with no obligations of service, responsibility or accountability.
I have had an account since 1989. In 2013 I was advised by W.S.I.B to freeze, not delete my account with them as my business has changed to dealing with clients directly, doing plans, design, permits only. This was suggested in case I ever did need to use it in the future. Easier than opening a new account later, if required. I have sent emails over the past few months trying to re-instate my account. No response from them to date.
So many people getting paid an insane amount of money in this Ontario Province, just to screw those want to make a leaving. The WSIB CFO is making average $202.00 an hour, that’s insane, when people get injured and got only misery.
I know people got injured long ago, could not work anymore and got only $ 550 per month, ($3.43 an hour) ( CFO making 198% per hour compared to this person) this person got no more coverage from WSIB on meds or anything else. What should we call these insane money collectors?
The WSIB should be all computer systems and a few people working, whit a decent pay not a rampage robbery. Or WSIB should be attached to the health care system, not a separated org. When any worker gets injured at his/her work, its their health enters into chaos, for many reasons, so it should be cover whit more care, not in the insane formula.
If anyone gets approved for disability status either in short or longer term, will get more money then injured under the WSIB. The Ontario government should abolish this WSIB once for all, and merged with health care, and health card should be used as the ID. And further more press charges on these crooks for abuse of the consumers act.
Because apparently their product its not in the conforms with other insurance companies. These Crooks want no others to compete with them, That’s why they want all the bills of legislation to protect their monopoly. It’s unfair, for the workers, which should be able to choose from, either WSIB or any other.
But in Ontario apparently, there is a dis-government, disconnected from the reality, only connected to their pay checks, and not interested in fix anything, to may friends to please.

WSIB has become a self-serving, money making business for the provincial government
The government has gone after the businesses who are the least able to pay. Another short sighted decision by a government who is more interested in listening to their corporate buddies than doing what is best for Ontario. Independent contractors are the least able to pass on these costs to customers and small businesses are the real job creators in any economy; hiring various labourers and apprentices. Shame. Approximately 30%-35% of workers do not have WSIB coverage and many of these jobs have less risk of physical injuries than labourer and sub-contractors. ALL employers should be required to be part of WSIB and ALL premiums paid by small businesses need to be lower especially when one considers the challenges faced by private contractors. Retail, banks and Insurance companies should be forced to pay into this plan, this would then reduce the level of premiums needed from other businesses.
That said; WSIB hasn’t been paying for injuries and disabilities anyway in most case. Perhaps WSIB will pay for short term injuries but they haven’t been paying for the permanently disabled now. Injured Workers and Poverty Survey 2010

So where are employer premiums going? One only needs to look at Ontario’s sunshine list where their are 100s of WSIB workers making well in excess of $100,000.00 plus bonuses for denying and limiting benefits to injured and disabled workers who are being forced into years of appeals for legitimate benefits. Management has introduced illegal policies that cut benefits and services paid to the permanently disabled. Therefore, injured and disabled workers are not receiving the benefits promised at 85% of wages and health care coverage; thousands have been forced onto welfare and to commit suicide.
Where else are these premiums going? Rebates in the form of experience ratings. Businesses are fined after workers have been injured and killed then WSIB turns around and provides certain big businesses huge rebates that are well in excess of these fines. This basically results in these certain businesses are receiving a refund for the premiums paid into WSIB. Who are these big businesses? I do not know but I can only guess they are supportive of this government. Many policies and practices by WSIB’s management are illegal and criminal since WSIB was suppose to be independent, non-adversarial and gathers of information for the administration of social benefits to injured and disabled workers. Much like EI is for the unemployed where legitimate benefits are to be paid in full. The WSIB system is suppose to fair and unbiased for the benefit for all. This has not been the case for many years since some businesses are not paying their fair share of premiums leaving some to pay more than they should. WSIB workers are way over paid for the work they do. WSIB should not be paying huge fees for doctors and clinics to rubber stamps benefit denials and ignoring medical specialist reports. Corruption!! All law abiding citizens need to let WSIB and the government know that this will not be tolerated anymore. Whether this is through protesting or through a Class Action Lawsuit for WSIB’s decisions that are illegal, patently unreasonable and beyond their authority. Businesses and Labour need to unit against this common enemy the corrupt agency, WSIB.
And in Ontario, as The Globe first revealed in March, Ms. Wynne and her cabinet regularly sell exclusive access to themselves at secret, small-scale fundraisers to corporations and lobbyists who do business with government. At one such event in December, for example, executives with some of the banks that profited from the government’s privatization of Hydro One paid $7,500 apiece for an evening with Finance Minister Charles Sousa and Energy Minister Bob Chiarelli. At another event in March, energy industry insiders paid $6,000 a plate to have dinner and cocktails with Ms. Wynne and Mr. Chiarelli.
As long as these parties keep going on in the rampage of our public assets, the Ontario government will not fix anything in this Province apparently. This is a shame, what our Politicians are doing, apparently its worse the prostitution.
Now Ms. Wynne wants to change the political fund raiser rules, no corporations or unions to be allowed to donated. ( should never be in first place) She should tell us, who donate to her political party last election, made her and her party a winner, in a impressive turn around. What she is up to this time? Maybe no much valuable public assets any longer to sale, who knows?
Is she getting paid over $200.000.00 a year, is for to attend private lobbying parties? The Liberal party in Ontario apparently became a disgrace, turned our lives in economic hell hole.
They have no interest in close down any side money tax collection agencies, in special those on the trades people.( WSIB, OCOT, ECRA, TSSA, etc) Most of these agencies are in flagrant violation of human rights code, Canadian charter of rights and freedoms, equality rights, and many more. The only way to finish these side agencies is by starvation, everyone should refuse to pay them all at once.
A good question for all of us in Ontario is: How many people from side ways agencies, in Ontario are involved in the Offshore accounts in panama?
How many Politicians either federal, Provincial and Municipalities are in this scandal, getting a free right on tax obligations?
How many union CEO’s could be involved in it also?
The panama Papers should reveal all Canadians which have illegal offshore accounts, for all to see.
If there are politicians in it, they should quit as fast as possible, like the Iceland prime minister did.
For sure there is more offshore accounts to protect the crooks, beyond the panama accounts. All of them should be revealed. its unfair when the hardworking people are been tax to dead, been used like slaves, when a few crooks have been and still, under protection of, bills, legislation, and bylaws, to allow them to get what they want and stored elsewhere, free of tax.
In my opinion, if all this illicit wealth placed in offshore accounts, should be seized, and used to help the poor, the sick, also people which can’t afford any place to leave, hospitals, nursing homes, and much more needs in our society. And those hidden this wealth should go to the feama camps, or any others like it, let them work hard, pay them nothing, let them learn the hard way. Reattribute to these crooks the same coin. There greed is beyond the point of understanding.
