Models affected: Various 1.5-ton and 4-ton ductless heat pump outdoor units. Visit HealthyCanadians.gc.ca for a complete list.

Potential problem: The fan motor can fail, leading to fires within the unit. There have been at least five reported cases in Canada.

Sold: Roughly 450 affected units were sold in Canada between March 2015 and April 2019.

Potential problem: To quote the recall notice: “The product…does not detect smoke, nor does it contain an audible notification device as part of the assembly.”

Sold: The manufacturer estimates that somewhere between 275,000 and 382,000 units were sold between 1979 and March 2019.

Potential problem: The unit can overheat and catch fire. There have been 9 reported incidents in Canada, with two leading to property damage.

Potential problem: The torch keeps going after being turned off. One incident has been reported in Canada to date, and 36 occurrences in the U.S.

Potential problem: The light socket can overheat and melt or catch fire. Ten incidents have been reported in Canada and there are 84 reports from the U.S., including three that led to fires.

Sold: The odds are in your favour on this one. Only 289 were sold in Canada between May 2013 and March 2015.
