Contractors from across the province are saying enough is enough and they will no longer accept the WSIB's effort to dig into their pocketbooks to deal with the $14.5 billion unfunded liability.

“Enough is enough,” they called out as they circled the Ontario Legislature to protest Ontario’s Bill 119. For many of the contractors gathered, the bill was adding $6,000 to $10,000 to their insurance bill even though they carried perfectly good private insurance costing less than a 1/4 of the mandated insurance of the WSIB. Listen to the comments of some of the contractors that participated here.

On my last quotation to a repeat client I put a separate line item for WSIB the client asked why he had to pay this now, so I explained that it is now the law (Bill 119)
After some research he got back to me and said this is real BS – of course we all agree.
My point is if other contractors did this, then I believe we would get more support from the general public as it would make them aware of this situation, after all they are the ones paying for the WSIB total inadequate ability.

ONE WAY TO PUT THEM IN THEIR PLACE IS FOR EVERYBODY FORCED TO SIGN AND IS FORCED TO PAY A PERCENTAGE OF OUR HARD EARNED DOLLARS.. GO AHEAD AND SIGN UP. THEN MAKE A CLAIM.. LETS BANKRUPT THIS COMPANY (LEGALLY). AND PROTECT WHAT WE WORK HARD FOR BEFORE OUR COUNTRY BECOMES BROKE!

Very concerned about Bill – 119 and the fact that it will not stop at commercial construction contractors [ they the Liberals nad the NDP will together advance this awful Bill – 119 in to every sector of small business ]. Some companies that i have spoken with that have done well and already have a few employees only see it as the cost of doing business or because they did not have to actually work get dirty per say that their new WSIB contribution would be only peanuts, but also said that they have never had any good experiences to relate whether it be for them selves or their employees.
But for one of companies who have never had empoyees and may or may not want any, or would may be, be interested in adding an employee / s, the fear of huge WSIB premiums and just the hassle of dealing with such an oppressive government bureaucracy is enough to make you want to qiut – Thanks McGuinty – Happy Family Day – It’s Too bad Premier Wynne would not take a stand for Ontario Families – Good luck to us all – We all need to keep Fighting for our rights and freedoms – All levels of Government are way to wastefull and being way to oppressive, we need less government, more private sector, too many poeple are employed by the government in jobs that should not exist.
If Premier Wynne wants to show the people of Ontario That she cares about the provincial deficit, she should impose wage reductions for all those working for the government – no one in government deserves more than $150.000.00 per year, with our deficit growing at more than $1,000.00 per second we all should be very concerned – STOP THE WSIB and THE WASTE

I find it ridiculous that an independent operator (i.e. sole proprietor without any workers) is mandated by a government, to pay a government owned and operated insurance company (i.e. WSIB) to cover his only worker, who is himself/herself. It makes me wonder there capitalism ends and communism begins. Bill 119 is crazy Liberal and NDP left wing policy at it finest. What sense in there in trying to be your own business? As far as the current Ontario government is concerned, NONE.

I just got of the phone with WSIB, now it’s not a happy Friday to say the least. I only had one contractor whom i sub of for almost two years so I was exempt. Work is a little slow for now but I was offered work from another painting company. So i called to get a clearence cert.. Well to my surprise they have thrown another monkey wrench into this dirty 119! In order to get registered I have to give them my last quarter amount (which is exempt) and give them a deposit based on the total earnings in order to get clearance. So outta 5000 dollars it will cost me 430 dollar deposit to go and earn 300 dollars! This has to end!

    • kaywood says:

Adding to my last comment. I forgot to mention that if I didn’t even make any earnings, in order for me to get my first clearance number I have to give them $100.00 to register!

  7. James Parsons says:

This is an election year. All sole proprietors should get fired up about Bill 119 again and write our MPPs. I am sick of paying at least 3 times more than my personal insurance. I don’t understand why we can’t submit annually a copy of our personal insurance that meets or exceeds the WSIB requirements. Proving that criteria we should pay the WSIB nothing. When does the little guy get a break?
