If you don’t know the answers to these questions, take a few minutes to watch this video. You’ll never look at a simple wood screw the same way again.

Gustavo Angola, Technical Specialist at ITW Construction Products Canada, gives Rob a “white board” lesson on wood screw physics. At issue are the ways in which a screw interacts with the material it is embedded in (i.e., the “substrate), the tensile (pulling) and shear (crosswise) strength of the steel, and the corrosion resistance of the coating.
