In this 7th episode of The Road to Net Zero, Rob Koci interviews NUDURA’s Gary Meine about his firm’s HYDROFOAM.
This product is used for hydronic radiant floor heating. Building codes require hydronic heating tubes to be installed on top of sheet foam anyway (to prevent energy dissipation). NUDURA’s “puck” design for its under-slab foam, as shown in this video, provides quick and easy routes for hydronic heating tubes to be installed WITHOUT the time-consuming element of hand-placed staples.
Hydronic radiant floor heating is all the rage these days for a number of reasons. First, it is a very efficient source of heat for a home. A room will heat more evenly when an entire floor is the heat source. Occupants of a room with hydronic radiant floor heating will feel more comfortable at a lower temperature setting on the thermostat, since the heat is being directly transferred to them through their feet. Very good, but there were a few items the should be cleared.
The code calls for a minimum of R10 under the slab of concrete when heating a slab.
On the one part of the video, he mentions that the insulation pushes the heat up and stops it from going down, but in Europe, they use no insulation. As he mentioned later that “Heat Rises”
We have been installing hydronic floor heat since 1992, There is a fine line on who should be allowed to install radiant floor heating and the College of Trades, was trying very hard to stop the HVAC companies from installing and saying that since this is a water based product, only Plumbers and trained hot water heating professionals be the ones to install.
The main reason is HVAC companies very rare install boiler systems and are not trained to do so.
To the customer or clients out there, make sure the guy installing the product is a trained installer from Rehau, Heatlink and the others out there so you get the manufacturer warranty.
As for the insulation, we use the Hot Rock panels made in Toronto.
