Is there anything more frustrating (and expensive) than drilling through a newly-installed shower wall to attach grab bars – and finding your drill FAIL to hit structure?
You “thought” you remembered where the studs were – but you were wrong. Now you’ve got a major problem replacing the perforated shower tile – which given today’s large-format tiles, won’t be a piece of cake.
Wouldn’t it be a good idea to avoid gambling that you can hit a (skinny) 2×4?
Wouldn’t it be a good idea to give yourself a bigger target?
And it wouldn’t it be a good idea to take a photo of the structure before you install the backer board and the tiles?

You have this backwards. Before you frame is the time to use sketch up and show where all of the studs and reinforcements and attachment points must be to suit code, the plumbing, electrical, drains etc. It is not worth it any more to just fly blind and hope you have remembered everything. The photo is still a good idea to show “as built” matches “as planned”.
