An Olympic diversion
Canadian Contractor canada LossI am wearing the maple leaf with pride again
A recent email from a friend of Canadian Contractor, contractor Brian Baker, came across my desktop and I have to share it. After the crushing disappointment of the woman’s Canadian soccer team’s loss to the U.S. and Simon Whitfield’s crash, it was hard to continue watching the Olympics. But Brian picked me up again and made me realize just how accomplished Canada is. Here’s his email:
Lots of talk about the Olympics and the medal counts…
Let us put the medal count in perspective…
China – population of 1,344,130,000 with 73 medals in total; this is 1 medal for every 18,127,740 persons
United States – population of 311,591,917 with 70 medals in total; this is 1 medal for every 4,451,313 persons
Great Brittan – population 62,641,000 with 48 medals in total; this is 1 medal for every 1,305,020 persons
Canada – population of just 34,482,779 with 13 medals in total; this is 1 medal for every 2,652,521 persons
Population numbers from the World Bank 2011
Why do we not talk in these terms and not see just how great our athletes are in not only Canada but all the commonwealth. Get with it Canadians, the numbers tell the real story.

Thanks, Brian. I am back on track.
A subsequent conversation with a friend last night reminds me of Jamaica. By far and away the winner in any per capita medal count.
