Contractors: Are you all work and no play?

Canadian Contractor Business risk Service

If you are all work and no play, as a professional contractor, you are going to burn out. Planning a vacation should be part of your business plan - it will increase your happiness AND productivity.

Today, instead of delivering news on what’s happening at my province’s (Ontario) Ministry of Labour or what the Ontario College of Trades is doing (usually, nothing good there), I thought I’d try to deliver something positive to you.

I want to talk about the importance of taking a vacation.

Maybe it’s time to stop slogging away with the daily grind, as it WILL wear you down. Maybe it’s time recharge yourself and actually help your business by taking a break from it. Yes, it’s the busiest time of the year – but I believe you DO need to plan some time off – if not now, then soon.

Expedia recently polled 1,001 (I wasn’t the “one”!) Canadians on the results of their vacations. The outcome from the poll was very interesting. After reading the results below, maybe you’ll be surfing online for last minute deals (no, I’m not in the employ of Expedia or any other online vacation-booking service!)

Here are the results of Expedia’s poll…

93% said their vacation relaxed and rejuvenated them.

78% became more focused after a vacation.

80% associated vacationing with their overall happiness and slightly more than half said it increased their happiness.

That compares with 16% who said that finding more money made them happy. 13% said getting a tax refund made them happier and 7% said celebrating their birthday brought them happiness.

Stress specialist and author Dr David Posen has written that vacationing can lower blood pressure, ease stress & tension and give one a strong feeling of well being. Vacations are a strong prescription medicine for health, stress relief, more energy, improved productivity and overall happiness.

So improve your productivity and take a break!
