Plumber forced to finish off carpenter’s shoddy work

"General carpentry should be on the list of compulsory trades at the Ontario College of Trades," says Jason McCurdy

I’m a licenced plumber and a member of the Ontario College of Trades. While I don’t totally agree with the College, I feel general carpentry should be on the list of compulsory trades. These contractors have to deal with the public on a daily basis and most are working on our biggest investment we will make in a lifetime, our homes. After seeing first hand the unreliable and poor workmanship our unlicensed contractor provided us, I think there needs to be some kind of control system put in place. After waiting three years, I finally have a lawyer to deal with this contractor as I try and finish the exterior of my house which should never have had to happen.

I agree with licensing carpenters. There are far too many individuals working as carpenters in the province of B.C. who have no educational or apprenticeship training. I would never hire anyone to build my home if they did not have the credentials. Journeyman carpenter with a certificate from a accredited college or university.

    as a licensed plumber —
I would like to see the water purification guys get licensed
you must be a licensed plumber to work on potable water in Ontario
but no one looks at these companies

There are lots of people working as handyman or calling themselves carpenters but are not licenced. And I have seen many carpenters that are licenced but are not all that good. Don’t see how the collage of trades would change that. In the over 35 years that I have been a carpenter not once has anyone asked to see a piece of paper that tells them I am a carpenter. Crap work, I see that everyday. Often a result of poor tradesmen teaching apprentices to do crap work. Not just carpenters but in every trade.
