So now the regulatory oversight of the trades in Ontario will move back to the Ministry of Colleges and Universities, which is taxpayer-funded and government run, eh? Great to see my taxes go up. Why doesn’t the PC government shut down the other colleges, like the Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons, The Ontario College of Teachers, The Ontario College of Social Workers. The Ontario College of Pharmacists, etc.? I guess blue collar workers will always be under the thumb… never professional.

There are a lot of reasons
Colleagues of all Professions should be closed down and soon. They make their members above the law. Convicted sex offenders should never be allowed to be Teachers or Doctors but they can….. Wake up people.
FYI…do you realise that if the OCT did not allow sex offenders to be teachers or doctors, then…they would be breaking the law. Criminal Law.
Ontario College of Trades served no useful purpose other than enriching the employees that it employed. I paid $135.00 per year for what? It was also duplicating some of the same roles that the Ministry of Labour were enforcing.
The Ontario college of trades (OCOT) is by far the most useless and unnecessary form of government enforced extortion that has ever been. They have done absolutely nothing but demand money from already struggling apprentices under threat of termination. The sooner they are tossed on the street the better. End the confusion and allow the people who pay their taxes to work and earn enough to do so. The only thing I have ever got from OCOT was a bill.

I sincerely hope that Mr Ford and his loved ones never have a home burn to the ground, due to a contractor having a “Jack of all trades” practicing skills he or she don’t have. I do, although, wait in anticipation for a snapshot of Mr. Ford to be knee high in waste because of the same person working for the same contractor also wears the plumbers hat. I wonder if then, Mr Ford will finally have enough shit on his hands.
I don’t think you have to worry about an increase in the number of houses burning down because of the closure of the OCOT. The ESA is looking after that. All it takes is for everyday citizens to stop paying CASH for work being done. Reputable contractors only have fully licensed trades people & fully indentured apprentices.
Honestly, the College of Trades were never going to be effective in averting the disasters you allude. It was essentially a duplication of functions already provided by other agencies.
As has been said in other comments, the purpose of the COT was to improve the chances of unions organizing into more trades.
Who the heck are they? They’re non-elected, they don’t answer to anyone who is elected and yet in our province if one wants to have a job fixing cars, building homes (or the like), he must not only obey their rules (that voters have zero input on) but also pay them money and meet whatever requirements they may impose to be a member of their exclusive college. I am so incredibly pleased that Ontarian’s said NO to this autocratic nightmare the only way we could.
It is the government’s (and only the government) job to enforce laws, policies and guidelines on the public. Any other organisation attempting to do so is subverting democracy in a very literal sense.
I’m so glad to see these thugs get shut down. A 300 per cent fee increase for what? To pad their interests? Good riddance.
