‘Working at Heights’ training delay stopping him putting a new guy to work

Richart wanted to put a new guy to work. But the Working At Heights certification rules stopped him from doing so.

Alec Caldwell has written more than a few posts about Ontario renovation and home building firms REQUIRING ‘Working at Heights’ training for their employees, owing to new regulations.

Alec’s organization (www.carahs.org) offers this training, but Richart, below, says he wishes this training was available even more frequently in the province – and in more locations.

“I think that the new Ontario “Working at Heights” training is a great course for all construction workers to take. I make it mandatory (in our policy) for all of my employees. BUT here is the problem: We all know that there is a huge shortage of people going into the trades. Yesterday I hired a new person to start but he didn’t have the “Working at Heights” training. I made a few calls to local training facilities/companies but no one is offering the training until mid January 2017. There were some further away (2-3 hour drive) from our location but that was it.

So now what – my attempt to hire a new employee has probably gone up in smoke as he can’t work until he has the training. Working without the training for a few weeks is an option but not for us.”

Anyone got any thoughts on this?

2-3 hour drive to obtain training to start a new job is not bad, I’m sure if you gave the guy the option to start earlier but he had to travel for training, he would take it. A days labour for traveling to and from a training course is not really a big deal to have someone working safely a month earlier than otherwise possible. I guess it depends how bad you need him, anyways just my 2 cents, have a great day!

an update – I did find a course that was scheduled for Dec. 19/16
It is located about an hour and half away so we opted for that. We scheduled and paid for the course right away to ensure that the new employee could get into the course. December 18/16 we received a notice that the course had been cancelled due to people backing out and the course not being full anymore GRRRRRRRRRRRRR. It is now rescheduled for mid January. This is not the first time that I have heard of a course being rescheduled for lack of attendance.
I wonder what would happen if I ran my business this way?? – sarcasm intended!!
