CHBA Newfoundland campaigning for tougher provincial regulation of contractors
Canadian ContractorEnough with those who offer Tailgate Warranties, says Victoria Belbin of the CHBA-NL
According to this article in Newfoundland media outlet The Western Star, the Newfoundland and Labrador chapter of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association (CHBA-NL) is lobbying the provincial government for the “same degree of contractor regulation” that already exists in B.C., Alberta and Ontario.
The article introduces a charming phrase for the business practices of fly-by-night operators. They offer a “Tailgate Warranty.” That is a guarantee that is only in effect for as long as a home owner can see the tailgate of the contractor’s truck.
This piece contains an interview with Victoria Belbin, CEO of the CHBA-NL on the difficulties that The Rock experiences with fly-by-night and unethical contractors. With a higher proportion of custom built homes thoughout Atlantic Canada, compared to the tract-home subdivisions of more populous provinces, consumers can be exposed to a less-regulated environment which can be tempting for scammers to operate in.
