Scam where “customer” needs renovations on a home they do not own is common

They need electrical work done on a house they are buying but haven't got the money to close the deal, is one version of the scam

Last week, we posted about an Edmonton contractor who was asked for an estimate on a renovation that turned out to be a scam. The so-called “home owner” didn’t even own the property that the contractor was invited to quote on.

Here is a comment from Mike Essiambre, Doctor Electric

I get calls all the time like this. Customer says they are buying a house that needs electrical work – $10,000 to $15,000 worth – but they they need some money to close the deal. There are all kinds of scammers out there. I have see it all from the good, then the bad, then the ugly. A word to all: be careful who you hire and do your homework – ask a friend, try the Better Business Bureau or check on internet. It is that easy.
