Cornwall, Ont. barber goes public with refusal to pay College of Trades fees

Chris Bourgon says that the Ontario College of Trades will, effectively, be taking all his earnings from 4 days of work. He sees absolutely no value at all in the College. He's not alone.

An increasing number of skilled tradespeople in Ontario are mad as hell at the Ontario College of Trades, a new regulatory body (which will teach no courses and educate no workers) that is set to demand hundreds of dollars in fees from certain categories of trades, early in 2013.

In the home improvement industry, licensed electricians, plumbers, sheet metal workers and air conditioning mechanics will be sent invoices for $120, probably by April.

But these aren’t the only trades being targeted. There are more than 20 different types of trades who have been declared “mandatory” (they must join the College). Even hairstylists will be hit up.

Here, a barber from the Cornwall, Ont. area, has had enough…

  1. Dwayne Meekison says:

My “VALID” Ontario mechanics licence doesn’t expired until March 2015. At which time if I’m not allowed too be re- certified without joining the Ontario College Of Trades “UNION”. Ontario will them have another unLicensed mechanic to deal with.
I WILL NEVER BECOME A “MEMBER” OF THE COLLEGE

WHY SHOULD I HAVE TO PAY TO BECOME A MEMBER TO SOMETHING I DON’T WANT TO BE A MEMMBER TOO.
