A reader crosses Canadian Contractor off his Christmas card list. We are now down to 31,343 subscribers and 50,000 page views a month.

Two days ago, we annoyed a reader who signed is as simply Dan. He delivered a hip-check to Canadian Contractor for what he obviously feels is our politically-conservative bias. (Last week we re-published a contractor’s post entitled, “When did this country start turning into a Communist dictatorship?”  We gave a prize to a reader (for giving us such a big laugh) with his reply, “June 25, 1968.” That was the day Pierre Trudeau first became our Prime Minister.)

Here is the shot Dan took at us, probably after we announced a prize he thought was inappropriate. Oh maybe he was annoyed he didn’t win?

“Your embarrassingly ignorant statements around politics make me question the soundness of your advice when it comes to building, and building a sustainable future.”

As the editor, I have to reply on behalf of our magazine. One, we wish we had MORE room for “building advice” in our pages (so it’s a point well taken, Dan) but we have to balance our “building” content with a ton of advice on running a more profitable renovation business. As for “sustainable” building practices, we think there are plenty of green building publications around and we are always interested in what they have to say. That’s just not our niche. What we DO like to do is highlight the efforts of independent contractors struggling with money-grabs from so many different levels of government, totally useless agencies like the Ontario College of Trades, and embarrassing bureaucratic cash-cows like Ontario’s WSIB.

Hey, I didn’t get the prize, some other guy did just for figuring it out!

That’s ok, I’m happy you enjoyed it. No tool necessary.

  2. Jim Groves says:

Dan’s statement is truly embarassingly ignorant. Sounds like he’s more of a politician than a contractor.
