Unimog Part 2: How can a vehicle’s birth certificate (VIN) be altered?

Canadian Contractor

Erwin Zimmermann continues to be tangled in a web of opaque bureaucracy and red tape

the-unimog-off-road-vehicle-of-the-year-2012-1It seems the mystery, bureaucracy, and red tape continues for Erwin Zimmermann, once the proud owner of a 2008 Unimog (Mog)

On July 16, 2015, I wrote a story titled: What’s a Unimog? And why did this contractor have his confiscated?

The twist in this saga, according to Zimmermann, comes when his Mog re-surfaced years later. The vehicle’s registration information had been changed.

When he bought his Mog, the VIN number indicated it was manufactured in Germany by Daimlerchrysler AG. When it re-appeared later, the VIN indicated it was made in Austria by Freightliner.generic-vin-plate

Now, I’m no wizard on the legalities of vehicles birth certificates (VIN numbers), but one thing is certain; we cannot (legally) change our own birth certificate. It shows when we’re born, what name we were given by our parents or guardians, the country or province of birth and, in many cases, our parent’s names.

According to Zimmermann, it’s the same with vehicles like his Mog. The vehicle is given a VIN number that identifies it and follows it for life.

The question is: Who changed the Mog’s  VIN number after the vehicle’s disappearance, including its country of birth (country of manufacture) and the parents’ name (the manufacturer) ….and why?

If you can shed any light or provide additional information on this ongoing situation, please let Erwin Zimmermann know. This contractor has suffered immensely these past years in his pursuit of answers and transparency.

Lets all speak out when we believe we see injustice.

  1. Erwin says:

The trial ended yesterday the 18th of August. Now we await for the decision tentatively on October 4th/16.
To clarify the new Austrian VIN issued by the court in 2013.
At the last minute of summations, the MTO prosecutor who entered the transcript for exhibit back in January, said the transcript had a typo in the VIN. The RED HERRING he gave to me and the court this whole time was wrong. I will say that the transcript was also NOT ENDORSED. We don’t know who the transcriptionist even is. I believe this was a process of not building a case against me, but I am of the opinion rather, a case he was creating. There are many more discrepancies as well. In May under cross examination of the prosecutors witness, the OPP officer who laid the 10 charges testified without being asked, that I had assaulted him that night by hitting him with the door of the UNIMOG. With all the OPP officers that night, not one made mention of that or wrote that in their notebooks. No assault charges with or without a weapon have been filed. Is this a threat ?
